To get a good idea of the range of sharpness in your portable digital projector, adjust the sharpness levels all the way to the maximum level and the minimum.  Examine how the picture quality changes at both levels.

To start, go all the way to the maximum sharpness level.  Then slowly edge downwards until the hard distorted edges start to disappear.  Adjust the sharpness level until the edges are crisp but not distorted.

Some portable digital projectors also have a color temperature setting.  These predefined profiles are unique to each projector and are set by the manufacturer.  You may wish to use these profiles as a starting point for calibrating your projector.

To calibrate the brightness levels of your portable digital projector, you’ll need to have a sample picture that you can use to adjust the brightness.  You’ll also want to let the projector warm up for at least 5 minutes and try to do your calibration in a dark room.

For the sample image, you’ll want to use something with high contrast (i.e. totally black and totally white) sections.  Some portable digital projectors come with sample images already preloaded for calibration.

Start calibrating your portable digital projector by turning the brightness level all the way up.  The image will now look faded and washed out.  Then bring the brightness down until the black parts of the image turn as dark as they possibly can.

Now you can fine tune your calibration.  Examine the white areas of the image.  The whites should still be white, not gray.  If the white areas are gray, then you’ve gone too far down, slowly adjust the brightness up again.
